Choosing Better Insurance

Charged With A DUI And License Suspended? You May Need To Obtain Insurance And An SR22 Certificate

If you have been charged with a DUI and your driver's license was suspended, you may have to obtain liability insurance with an SR22 certificate. This does depend on the state that you live in, however. You can find the information at your local Department of Motor Vehicles, if needed. Below is some more information about what an SR22 is, how you will be notified, and the requirements and terms you may have to follow.

What an SR22 Is

SR22, also referred to as financial responsibility document or certificate of insurance, is a type of liability insurance that will likely be required if you have a DUI on your record. Insurance companies require this because people that have DUIs on their record are considered high risk.

Notified by Mail

You will receive a letter by mail from the Department of Motor Vehicles if you are required to get liability insurance and an SR22 certificate. If you are required to do this, your insurance company may charge you a fee. What this fee is depends on the insurance company you have. Depending on the state that you live in, there may be other fees you will have to pay also.

You cannot file the SR22 on your own, but the insurance company must file this for you. This will ensure the SR22 is authentic to the Department of Motor vehicles.

SR22 Requirement and Terms

You will likely have to follow certain requirements and terms. What these are depends on the state that you live in. For example, you must retain the SR22 and an insurance policy in a certain number of years, such as two or three years.

If you do not purchase this insurance, your insurance company will call the Department of Motor Vehicles and alert them. Your license will then be suspended until you purchase insurance. When you have met the SR22 obligations for the right amount of time, the SR22 status is removed from your record.

Your insurance company can help you obtain the right paperwork and get you set up with all this. This will ensure you can keep your license and will have no further problems with the police.

Talk with an insurance company like Angel Auto Insurance about this information as soon as your license is suspended. They can go over all this with you in much more detail and answer any questions you may have about this type of insurance policy.

About Me

Choosing Better Insurance

After struggling for months to recover after a natural disaster swept away our home, I realized that one of the things I needed to change moving forward was our insurance. We started focusing carefully on what we needed to do, and before we knew it, we were able to find a really great insurance provider who really understood what we needed. They were kind, caring, and incredibly accommodating, and it was a pleasure to get things taken care of. After we had our policies in place, it was interesting to see how much of a difference we were able to make. This blog is all about choosing better insurance.
